Program Notes

Cloud Burst was commissioned by Mr. Michael Kannen, the Director of Chamber Music at the Peabody Conservatory, and founding member of the Brentano String Quartet.  I am honored to have the piano part performed by Ann Teresa Kang, director of the CAGE Ensemble and faculty member of the Peabody Preparatory department.

Cloud Burst is a duet composed for cello and piano. Accentuating the diverse colors and virtuosic techniques of cello and piano, a dialogue emerges. Through alternating rhythmic violence and spatial intimacy, the instruments discuss delicate, conflicting emotions. Cello and piano are intimately interlocked with one another for the duration of the piece, so contradictory sections often blur together, moving from inner turmoil to serene calm, flowing from feeling to feeling, echoing then shouting inner desires and fears.
